Job Ref: Staffordshire

Pay Rate: £26.44 per hour PAYE

Hours per week: 40 Monday - Friday, normal working hours

Assignment duration: 3 months

Working arrangement: Hybrid

Company car/car allowance: £6600pa/£550pm

Summary of what the candidate must have to apply
  • Degree in Business, Supply Chain or related field, or CIPS Level 6/MCIPS (or working towards) .
  • Proven experience in procurement or category management, including running competitive tenders.
  • Strong experience negotiating haulage and waste disposal contracts.
  • Experience managing third-party subcontractors and suppliers within waste transportation and/or waste disposal.
  • Strong analytical, commercial, contract management and stakeholder engagement skills.
The role:

The postholder will manage the haulage and waste disposal category, developing and delivering strategic category plans across multiple waste streams. This involves leading tendering activity, negotiating rates, managing subcontractors, analysing category performance and ensuring alignment with group procurement strategy. The role supports value creation, supplier performance and operational efficiency across all transportation modes (road, rail, sea and air freight)

Key accountabilities:
  • Lead end-to-end tendering processes for waste transportation and disposal services.
  • Negotiate rates, contract terms, fuel surcharges and demurrage arrangements with subcontractors.
  • Manage supplier relationships, conduct performance reviews and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and execute category strategies across multiple waste treatment categories (incineration, landfill, recycling, composting, specialist treatments).
  • Measure and report category performance using KPIs and spend analysis.
  • Identify category risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with Procurement Business Partners, Group Procurement and internal stakeholders.
  • Support budgeting, demand forecasting and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Work with finance to analyse spend and identify opportunities.
  • Manage and develop a Category Specialist, delegating tasks appropriately.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives and incorporate circular economy principles into category plans
Requirements/key criteria:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, Supply Chain or similar, or CIPS qualification (MCIPS) or working towards it.
  • Demonstrable procurement or category management experience.
  • Strong background in running tenders and negotiating haulage and waste disposal contracts.
  • Experience managing third-party subcontractors and supplier relationships.
  • Knowledge of waste transportation (road, rail, sea, air freight) and waste disposal categories.
  • Strong skills in contract management, supplier performance, data analysis, negotiation, commercial decision-making and risk management.
  • Understanding of sustainability, ESG principles and compliance requirements within waste management.
  • IT competent with strong analytical capability.
Desirable:
  • Chartered MCIPS or CMILT.
  • MBA or master's qualification.
  • Experience in the waste management or environmental services sector.
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations, special waste handling and international transportation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well under pressure
