The DSL is part of a long-standing tradition of excellence in the world-wide networks of more than 136 schools abroad. All schools are accredited and supported by the Federal Republic of Germany. DSL offers an appealing and challenging educational programme from Kindergarten to Abitur with a specific emphasis on German language and culture in a bi-lingual environment.

The DSL is set in beautiful, extensive grounds next to the river Thames near Richmond, and it is a wonderful environment for staff and children alike.

The Career Advisor delivers an exciting and engaging career advice programme, centred around the specific needs and circumstances of our pupils. He/she develops exciting and productive partnerships with pupils, teachers and parents as well as external organisations, such as companies, businesses and educational establishments to help our pupils become genuine 'citizens of the world' and prepare themselves for life beyond the classroom.

The Career Advisor is the main point of contact for pupils when it comes to career advice and support, and they collaborate with teams at the DSL to understandpupil's progress throughout the School and beyond to deliver the best outcomes for them.

Main duties and areas of responsibilities

  • Provide impartial career advice and deliver a bespoke programme of comprehensive information about career opportunities in Germany, the UK and globally
  • Providing excellent and personalised advice and support to each pupil at every stage, particularly at key decision-making points around 'Mittlerer Schulabschluss' (GCSE/IGCSE), Abitur and IB level and university (or any other option pupils wish to pursue as school leavers) as well as careers after graduation
  • Collaborating with the existing careers advisory team ('Studien-und Berufsberatung') to develop a skills-based careers education programme for all pupils in Secondary School
  • Working closely with the Senior Leadership and pedagogical staff across the school to promote a wide range of relevant and effective initiatives
  • Deliver an inclusive programme of events and interactions so that pupils gain access to employers and Higher Education to broaden their experience and knowledge of the opportunities available
  • Pro-actively helps pupils in their career choices and the application process for their next career step
  • Organise Insight talks for years 9-12 and support pupils of year 10 and FOS in applying for and sourcing a work placement
  • Develop and manage year-specific workshops and organise events
  • Organise and run the Reach High Club
  • Plan, arrange and lead career fairs to showcase different career option and professions
  • Organise information sessions for parents including at parent evenings, career's week and open days
  • Maintain good contact and consistent communication with UCAS Advisor and German University Advisor and visit selected universities
  • Providing the school with labour market information and regularly evaluating data on the German and the UK as well as other relevant nations
  • Managing the school's alumni programme in co-ordination with other roles at the school
  • Carry out any other duties reasonably requested by the school and the Headteacher

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant experience as Career Counsellor or a strong background in careers education in an international school or educational environment
  • Master's degree or similar educational degree
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral
  • German to level B1 would be advantageous
  • Knowledge and understanding of the German 11-19 curriculum
  • Knowledge of Gatsby benchmarks
  • Experience in developing student's employability in the UK, Germany and globally
  • Sound knowledge in delivering pupil-centric programmes that support those seeking alternatives to university
  • Proven ability to act as sounding board to pupils and in supporting their career development including progression into higher education
  • Track record in organising career-related enrichment events inside and outside the school
  • Experience in creating activities, including but not limited to writing a CV/ Motivational Letter, to practice new skills, to improve interview skills, etc
  • Sound knowledge in creating and delivering high-quality programmes to develop pupil employability skills
  • Experience in supporting pupils with work experience placements in Germany, the UK and globally
  • Good knowledge of apprenticeship schemes and experience in guiding pupils on how to apply
