Care Officer (Children's Homes)

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Children's Services, is rated GOOD by Ofsted; our Children's Homes are all rated Good or Outstanding. As a Residential Service, we strive to deliver outstanding care to our children and young people, enabling them to aim high and achieve their goals and aspirations. This is an exciting time to join us as we expand our service provision to provide excellent homes for children and young people in the local area, maintaining their identity in the place they grew up. This vacancy is in a solo placement children's home located in Skirlaugh, open since Feb 2024. It is rated Good in all areas by Ofsted and provides care for one young person with social, emotional, and mental health needs and/or learning disabilities.

If you are kind, caring, and compassionate, have experience providing outstanding care for children and young people, and are looking for a new challenge where you can develop your portfolio and shape the lives of vulnerable young people, our Care Officer role could be the next step in your career.

The Role

As a Care Officer, you will be responsible for caring for and supporting our children and young people, similar to what a parent would do. This includes encouraging their interests and hobbies, supporting their education, facilitating family time, ensuring their home is clean, warm, and cozy, cooking meals, and making sure they feel safe and secure. You will transport young people in the home's vehicle, assist with their schoolwork, listen to their wishes and feelings, and work with their families to promote positive relationships.

Our children and young people often have experienced trauma. They need understanding and meaningful relationships to keep them safe and help them enjoy the world around them. Our young people value Care Officers who are caring, approachable, respectful, determined, interested, giving, adaptable, and non-judgemental. They also assist in the interview process to select suitable candidates.

You will receive comprehensive induction, regular supervision, and access to various training opportunities. You will need to participate in physical intervention training and be able to apply it in your daily work.

All candidates must hold or be committed to attaining a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent as per the Children's Homes Regulations 2015) within 18 months of starting the role to meet regulatory standards. The role involves working a variety of shifts, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and sleep-in duties. The shift pattern offers a degree of flexibility.

The job itself

In addition to the stated salary, this role offers enhancements including:

  • Time and a half for weekend hours worked between 7am and 11pm
  • Time and a third for weekday evening hours worked between 8pm and 11pm
  • Sleep-in shifts from 11pm to 7am (or an equivalent 8 hours)
  • Double time and time off in lieu for Bank Holidays

This results in an additional approximately £3,800 per year for weekend and evening enhancements and £2,000 per year for sleep-in shifts.

Our Practice Model

'You can, I can, We can'

Our work reflects the Stronger Together practice model, embodying our values and behaviours as one East Riding of Yorkshire. This model helps create a shared language and understanding of how we do the right things, in the right way, for children and their families.

If this sounds like the role for you, we look forward to hearing from you!
