An exciting opportunity has arisen within the established Cancer Admissions Avoidance Team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and dynamic nurse to join our friendly and forward thinking multi disciplinary team.
As a Cancer Admissions and Triage CNS you will be involved in a range of activities including:
- Acting as an oncology resource to patients and healthcare colleagues.
- Offering evidence based advice through triaging patients using the UKONS proforma, maintaining telephone clinics and facilitating patient flow 7 days a week.
- Recognising complications related to treatment and, where possible, minimising the need for hospital admission.
- Participating in audits and providing feedback to the wider oncology team.
- Teaching in both group settings and during 1:1 sessions.
- Attending informal visits - highly recommended.

Job responsibilities- Acting as a resource for patients and healthcare colleagues who contact the hospital via the oncology triage line.
- Triaging oncology patients using the UKONS proforma, offering appropriate evidence based advice to minimize the need for hospital based assessment and admission.
- Maintaining a telephone review clinic for all cycle 1 chemotherapy patients to assess complications early and encourage self management or arrange day case assessment.
- Maintaining databases designed to record telephone clinics for appropriate coding and to ensure accurate funding streams.
- Facilitating patient flow 7 days a week to ensure appropriate places of care for inpatients (reducing outlying bed usage) and direct non admission assessments.
- Current level one NMC registration (adult branch).
- UKONS triage trained.
- Completion of chemotherapy package.
- IV competent.
- Formal leadership and management training.
- Research training/experience.
- Suitable teaching & assessing qualification.
- Significant experience at Band 5 level in oncology.
- Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relatives/carers and staff.
- Experience triaging oncology patients.
- Recent or current experience within the specialty.
- Involvement in link nurse or project work.
- Knowledge of oncology admission pathways.
- Audit or research within the clinical area.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective communication over the phone to patients and colleagues.
- Ability to manage complex situations over the phone.
- Ability to give clear and evidence based oncological advice in a variety of settings.
- Basic IT skills.
- Recognition of own level of competence and limitation, and ability to communicate these to appropriate staff.
- Negotiation and influencing skills.
- Provision of formal teaching sessions.
- Team working and collaboration within a team.
- Response to problem situations and implementation of effective interventions.
- Understanding of bed management and discharge coordinator roles.
- Assessment, planning, delivery, prioritisation and evaluation of patient care.
- Knowledge of current NHS policy issues.

- Contribute to development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans.
- Supervise and support others.
- Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties.
- Dexterity and accuracy in performing clinical skills, equipment use and documentation.
- Competence in medical equipment use.
- Moving and handling training.
- Manual handling of patients and non patient manoeuvres.
- Enthusiastic and well motivated.
- Caring and compassionate.
- Attendance at conferences/study days.
- Understanding of the role of advocacy.
