We're looking for an exceptional Building Services Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Building Services Engineer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

Step into a pivotal role where your technical expertise shapes the future of the Met Office estate.Based at our Exeter HQ and extending across the UK, you'll be at the heart of building services engineering-delivering excellence, driving innovation, and ensuring compliance across a diverse portfolio.

As a trusted expert, you'll provide strategic and hands on support across a wide range of engineering disciplines . Your responsibilities will include:

  • Technical Leadership
    Offer expert guidance on building services engineering matters, ensuring robust solutions across the Met Office estate.
  • Stakeholder Support
    Collaborate with Property Management teams to support both the HQ Hard Services FM contract and the Frontline Hard Services FM contract.
  • Project Delivery
    Review and advise on designs, drawings, specifications, and tender documentation to ensure projects meet technical and regulatory standards.
  • Compliance & Assurance
    Provide professional advice on legal and regulatory compliance, helping maintain a safe and efficient estate.
  • Estate Inspections
    Conduct regular site inspections across the UK to assess condition, ensure maintenance compliance, and prioritise emerging needs.
  • Specification & Procurement
    Assist in preparing works specifications, technical briefs, and tender documents. Work closely with commercial and procurement teams to ensure best value and regulatory compliance.
  • Contractor Management
    Ensure contractors deliver services in line with contract provisions, maintaining high standards and accountability.

As our Building Services Engineer, your total reward package will be up to £52,248 annually, which includes:

  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,800 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until March 2026 in your monthly pay
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
Essential Criteria, skills and experience

To succeed in this role, you must demonstrate:

  • Professional Accreditation
    Possession of, or active progress toward, a relevant building services professional accreditation (e.g. IEng, IMechE).As an Expert by nature you will be expected to apply your technical knowledge to ensure the Met Office meets its statutory obligations.
  • Independent Working & Regulatory Knowledge
    Ability to work independently with a strong understanding of building services and construction related legislation and regulations.
  • Broad Interest in the Built Environment
    A proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues beyond your core discipline-such as building fabric maintenance and inspection.
  • Effective Communication Skills
    Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders.
  • Collaborative Mindset
    A team oriented attitude, willing to support colleagues and contribute to shared goals, as we are always better together .
  • Driving Licence
    A full UK driving licence, as regular travel across the UK estate is required.
