Job overview

We are seeking a reliable Building Services Assistant to join our Estates team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The role supports the day to day maintenance of the Trust's buildings, helping to ensure a safe, compliant and well maintained environment for patients, staff and visitors.

You will carry out a range of routine maintenance duties including ventilation grille cleaning, minor plumbing, general building repairs, inspections and responding to Estates helpdesk requests. Working closely with Estates Technicians and supervisors, you will support planned and reactive maintenance across clinical and non clinical areas.

The ideal candidate will have practical maintenance experience, a strong focus on safety and compliance, good teamwork skills and the ability to use IT systems to record work.

Main duties of the job
  • Complete ventilation grille cleaning and support ventilation related tasks in line with HTM requirements.
  • Carry out basic plumbing work, including unblocking drains, replacing taps, and addressing minor leaks.
  • Support minor mechanical repairs, routine checks, and general building fabric duties.
  • Deliver handyman level jobs such as fixtures, fittings, minor carpentry, and general repairs across the estate.
  • Respond to Estates helpdesk requests, ensuring timely completion or escalation of issues.
  • Assist Estates Technicians and Trades in delivering PPMs and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Support safe working practices across the Trust, following Estates policies, HTMs, and relevant safety procedures.

The role is essential in ensuring that routine maintenance tasks are carried out efficiently and at required frequencies, supporting statutory compliance, infection prevention, and a high quality environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Person specification
  • A good standard of education with manual dexterity GCSE at minimum grade C or equivalent in English, Maths and Science/Physics.
  • Service training certificates.
  • NVQ/City & Guilds Level 2 qualifications or similar in Mechanical/Plumbing, Building Services or Electrical.
  • Experience of working for a large organisation.
  • Evidence of self advancement Engineering Design Technology at GCSE or equivalent.
Experience/knowledge
  • Demonstrable experience within a maintenance environment.
  • Prioritisation of tasks.
  • Experience of working in a Hospital Estates department using CAFM, ISO 9001 QMS, Operation & Maintenance Manuals, Building Management Systems.
Skills/Abilities
  • Work co operatively with skilled colleagues and under minimal supervision.
  • General knowledge in respect of engineering maintenance.
  • Confirm commitment to complying with The Trust Values.
  • Self starter able to work with minimal supervision and under pressure.
  • Knowledge of allied trades.
