Job Description

Jewish Blind & Disabled is looking for a volunteer befriender for a male tenant living in our Snaresbrook development. The role involves regularly visiting the tenant to offer companionship and conversation, aiming to alleviate loneliness and provide a listening ear.

About the charity

Jewish Blind & Disabled is the only charity dedicated to enabling people aged 18 and over with physical disabilities or impaired vision to live independently with dignity and choice. One in five people in the UK encounter a disability diagnosis at some point in their lives, and someone goes blind each hour. Our mission is to restore independence and hope for the future through state of the art mobility solutions and resident house managers on site and on call 24/7, giving peace of mind to tenants and their families.

Key responsibilities
  • Visit the tenant regularly (frequency agreed with management)
  • Provide companionship, conversation, listening support, and act as a friendly presence
  • Assist with non medical tasks such as reading, discussing news or engaging in hobbies as requested by the tenant
  • Report any significant concerns to the house manager or relevant staff
What we will provide you
  • Training on communication techniques and sensitivity to disability needs
  • Orientation to our Snaresbrook development and safety procedures
  • Ongoing support and supervision from the house manager
Benefits of volunteering
  • Contribution to improved quality of life for a person with a disability
  • Opportunity to develop empathy, listening and caring skills
  • Flexible visiting schedule to fit around your commitments
