As Legal Counsel at British American Tobacco (BAT), you will have an important role supporting some of the markets in forefront when it comes to delivering the BAT strategy of building A Better Tomorrow by reducing the health impact of BAT's business.
Together, you and the Legal Team will be responsible for the provision of high quality, commercially focused legal advice to enable the business to meet its commercial and strategic objectives. The Legal Team's work ranges all the way from commercial contracts, marketing and activation strategies and execution across multiple touchpoints (including e-commerce, digital marketing and retail) to regulatory counselling, product development and manufacturing.
Since Sweden is one of the pioneering markets when it comes to new categories, a lot of product development and trials are based here. This means numerous of new regulatory legal aspects for the Legal Team to take into consideration and advise on to different stakeholders.
The successful candidate will act as a dedicated point of contact for all legal matters supporting the entire business across a range of legal, regulatory and reputational issues. Additionally, you will be responsible for the optimal management of team resources through the design and implementation of streamlined processes and ways of working.
BAT Nordics have commercial offices in Copenhagen, Oslo, Malmö and Stockholm, with its Nordic headquarters in Copenhagen, as well as production in Malmö. The position is based at BAT's Swedish office in Hyllie, Malmö.
Some travel within the Nordic region can be expected as required.
LEGAL TEAMYou will join a well-established and collaborative Nordic Legal Team consisting of eight team members, including the Head of Legal Nordics, Alexandra Iskandar. The team operates across the Nordic markets and plays a central role in supporting BAT's commercial and regulatory agenda in the region.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITYBAT is looking for a business-minded lawyer with experience within commercial law and compliance.
As Legal Counsel, you will namely be handling the following tasks:
- Be the primary responsible lawyer for BAT's Norwegian business and factory in Sweden and additionally assist your Swedish colleagues in the Legal Team with support to the Swedish business. You will also be part of the broader Norwegian and the Swedish factory's management teams.
 - Your role will cover a broad range of legal areas, including advising on commercial law, corporate law, contracts, marketing law, competition law and IP law, corporate governance, compliance (such as anti-bribery, sanctions and data protection), regulatory matters and risk management, although it is recognized that you cannot be an expert in all these areas.
 - Engagement with key stakeholders across the organization to understand their needs and ensure the legal department's services are aligned with business requirements. This includes regular communication and collaboration with other departments such as Trade, Brand, Finance, HR, and CORA.
 - Drafting, negotiating and reviewing local contracts and contractual documents (including sales, distribution, services and local procurement contracts), as well as local implementation of global partnerships and global framework agreements.
 - Implementing best practices within the legal department to support business objectives and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. Maintain, develop and implement corporate policies, procedures and systems and develop and conduct training in the organisation.
 - Contributing to cross functional projects and initiatives to assess, monitor and anticipate potential and actual risks to the business.
 - Instructing and managing external counsel when needed, reviewing output, and controlling and approving spend as required.
 
In order to be successful, you need to be able to build solid relationships and to be influential with different stakeholders in your surroundings. You thrive in being part of the Legal Team, but you don't have any problems operating independently and proactively, taking the initiative when needed. In a large and dynamic environment like BAT, unexpected and varied demands are bound to arise with short notice.

IDEAL EXPERIENCEEducation: You have a Master of Laws from Sweden or another Scandinavian country.
Work experience: At least 5-6 years of relevant post-graduate experience in commercial, compliance, and corporate matters, gained through in-house legal experience, possibly complemented by experience from an established law firm. Experience within an FMCG business or in a highly regulated industry is an advantage, but not a requirement.
Legal specialization: Ideally, you have experience within the field of commercial law, competition law, marketing law, and IP law. In addition, you have experience with compliance matters, including GDPR, AML, antitrust, and / or sanctions.
Language skills: You must be fluent in English and in one of the Nordic languages (Danish, Swedish or Norwegian), both written and spoken.

You constructively balance legal and commercial interests, and you are comfortable with flagging and challenging processes and decisions that impose regulatory compliance risks.
