Summary
  • The Market Risk Manager is responsible for overseeing, measuring, and reporting the market risk arising from the branch's trading and banking book activities.
  • This role ensures that the branch operates within its risk appetite and complies with UK regulatory expectations, including PRA Rulebook requirements, FCA Handbook obligations, and relevant supervisory statements for third-country branches.
  • The role combines hands on risk analysis with governance, oversight and challenge. It requires strong technical expertise, sound judgement, and the ability to engage credibly with senior management, traders and head office.
What You'll be Doing Each Day
  • Monitor, measure and report market risk exposures across all relevant products (e.g., FX, interest rate products, repos, fixed income and derivatives).
  • Ensure adherence to risk limits, triggers and escalation procedures defined by Head Office and the branch.
  • Perform daily risk analysis including VaR, sensitivities, stress testing, scenario analysis and limit utilisation.
  • Responsible for modelling and monitoring of IRRBB and transaction FX risk.
  • Identify emerging risks and propose enhancements to risk measurement methodologies.
  • Support the branch's stress testing and scenario design.
  • Prepare materials for GM, CRO, Risk Committee and ALCO and senior management meetings.
  • Contribute to regulatory submissions and respond to queries related to market risk.
  • Ensure compliance with SMCR responsibilities applicable to the role.
  • Develop, maintain and implement market risk policies, procedures and control standards.
  • Provide independent challenge to the Front Office on pricing, valuation and risk taking activities.
  • Oversee model governance for market risk models used by the branch, including VaR, IRRBB, sensitivities and stress testing frameworks.
  • Support validation of pricing models and valuation adjustments.
  • Produce daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly market risk reporting for branch management and Head Office.
  • Analyse drivers and ensure alignment between risk measures and actual trading outcomes.
  • Monitor market developments and assess their impact on the branch's market risk profile.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for market risk matters within the branch.
  • Work closely with branch Front Office, Finance, Compliance and Internal Audit, and Head Office.
  • Liaise with Head Office risk teams to ensure consistent application of risk standards.
  • Lead and contribute to ad hoc risk management initiatives and projects.
  • Other activities assigned by the GM, CRO or Head of Risk Management.
Skills You'll Need to Succeed
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills in Mandarin and English.
  • University degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related field with at least 4 years experience in market risk management and/or trading functions at a UK bank, ideally within a branch or an international banking environment.
  • MBA, CFA and/or industry certifications are desirable.
  • Strong understanding of market risk measurement techniques (VaR, IRRBB, sensitivities, stress testing).
  • Solid knowledge of fixed income markets, FX, derivatives pricing and risk modelling.
  • Experience with risk systems (e.g. Murex, Bloomberg, Risk Metrics) and strong Excel/Python skills.
  • Familiarity with UK regulatory frameworks for third country branches is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to challenge constructively and maintain independence.
  • High level of integrity and sound judgement consistent with SMCR expectations.
