Bank Podiatrist

To workas part of an autonomous and innovative team specialising in foot and lowerlimb pathologies.

Toassess, diagnose, implement and develop individualised assessment and treatmentprogrammes for patients presenting with foot pathologies and medical need. Thiswill involve general and specialist care within a range of locations, includingclinical, domiciliary, hospital, and other external settings with an emphasison a multidisciplinary approach.

Tocommit to a philosophy of a patient centred approach to care, with emphasis onclient empowerment and self-care.

To workas a highly motivated team member within the podiatry and multidisciplinaryteam settings and external organisations, to achieve the best patient outcome.

To beresponsible for the management of Podiatric caseloads from a high-risk caseloadincluding patients with wounds, demonstrating a high level of knowledge andskills to ensure the provision of high quality care, whilst observing andimplementing policies, guidelines and procedures of Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible and accountable for thecomplex assessment, diagnosis and treatment of new and existing patients with awide variety of Podiatric complaints. This includes,

systemic diseases

vascular andneurological disorders

chronic pathologies

emergency treatments

paediatric conditions

nail and skinpathologies.

To provide Podiatric care plans tailored to thepatients medical needs with regular review and the ability to identify andco-ordinate further interventions. To ensure timely and appropriate referralsto other specialists from within the department and outside. For example GPs,District Nursing, Hospital Acute Foot Clinic, Social services and voluntaryorganisations, facilitating safe and appropriate discharge where indicated.

To treat a wide variety of patient groupsincluding those with special needs, housebound, children, elderly, adults,vulnerable groups and those from different cultural backgrounds with thepossibility of communication barriers.

Todemonstrate sound clinical expertise and knowledge in the management of seriousand high risk pathologies for example: infected foot ulcers

To undertake specialist diabetes and high-risksessions for the assessment and treatment of patients.

Job responsibilities

Tocarry out assessments and treatments of podiatry patients in a range ofsettings: clinics, nursing homes and in the patients home. Moderate physicaleffort is involved in the clinical setting, but a high level of physical effortand risk assessment is required for nursing homes and in the patients home, asthese more challenging environments are not designed for clinical care

Tohave highly developed physical skills, dexterity, precision hand/eyecoordination requiring frequent and intense periods of prolonged concentrationand dexterity. For example:

Debridementof callous/corns/foot ulcers, which may require debridement at acute angles,e.g. client with limited mobility who is wheelchair bound

Towork to a fully allocated domiciliary and clinical caseload, working to time,yet demonstrating flexibility by incorporating emergency referrals as required into workplan including the sameday, using time management, stress management and prioritisation skills towork to scheduled appointment times.

Toundertake the assessment and treatment of patients with lower limbmusculo-skeletal pathologies, where duties will include:

-Theprescription, fabrication and evaluation of chair-side insoles/orthotics

-Theprescription and evaluation of an appropriate exercise and stretching regime

-Evaluation,prescription and casting for bespoke orthoses

Toundertake minor surgery assessments and treatments, where duties will include:

-Nailsurgery

-Electro-surgery

-Theuse of local analgesia injection therapy to the lower limb, with the ability tomanage anaphylactic shock if required

Thepost holder may be required to work at any of the PCTs sites in line withservice needs.

Person Specification Qualifications

• State registration to HPC
• Podiatry Diploma/ Degree
• Commitment to continuous development of clinical skills and professional knowledge.
• Awareness of current changes within the NHS.
• Full Driver's Licence
• IRMER certificate
• POMs certificate
• Evidence of CPD portfolio demonstrating knowledge base.
• Ability to diagnose, construct, document, implement and evaluate care plans using a holistic approach
• Ability to make decisions
• To demonstrate good organisational skills in managing own caseload with a proportion of high-risk patients.
• Ability to use electronic resources to create, analyse and share information e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point
• Good verbal and written communication skills in order to deal with people of all age groups in clinical situations and also other health care professional.
• Demonstrate ability to use specialist diagnostic & therapeutic equipment e.g., doppler ultrasound, neurosthesiometer, gait analysis systems
• Hand eye co-ordination, dexterity, manipulation, keyboard activity

Experience

• A minimum 1 years Post graduate experience of treating a high-risk caseload including a wound care caseload and a willingness to undertake post graduate training and education in specialist areas of podiatry e.g diabetes
• Post graduate experience in:
• Minor surgical procedures.
• Biomechanics including diagnosis, fabrication, prescription and evaluation of orthoses and formulating treatment plans, muscle balancing programmes.
• Local analgesia injection including calculating maximum safe doses and detecting contra-indications to use.
• Post graduate experience of full patient assessment (medical history, vascular, neuropathic etc) and formulating diagnosis & treatment plans.
• Experience in coaching students and willingness to undertake training in clinical coaching
• 2 years post graduate experience of treating a high risk caseload including people with diabetic and ischaemic foot ulceration
• Involvement in Health Education
• Evidence of working within Specialist areas of Podiatry e.g. Podiatric Surgery, Diabetes, R.A etc.
• Training in clinical coaching
