Are you interested in progressing your career and working in a highly specialised area of psychology? Would you like to work for a nationally recognised service, and help improve the psychological wellbeing of patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMD). An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 0.93 WTE Band 8a Clinical Psychology post to continue to develop a psychology service within the Inherited Metabolic Disorders Services and contribute to service provision in the Diabetes Service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be part of an internationally recognised multidisciplinary team who provide holistic care for people with a range of rare inherited physical and psychological health conditions across University Hospitals Birmingham. You will join an experienced, specialist multi-disciplinary team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Tasks include:

• Offering assessment and psychological treatment for patients within the IMD and Diabetes services.
• Supporting department staff in offering basic psychological support in their routine clinical practice.
• Research is an integral part of care for patients with rare diseases, and you will play a critical role in the IMD extensive research programme. Additional training and mentoring support will be provided.
• Providing audit and service evaluation. You will represent the IMD service both nationally and internationally in our collaborative work as appropriate.

You will need to be able to demonstrate a highly developed understanding of the psychological impact of compromised physical health and be able to adapt your psychological interventions accordingly. Experience in working in a physical health setting is desirable, but not essential. You need to have experience of working across the lifespan with individuals and families, as well as have experience of working across systems and with different professional specialties. You will be working closely with doctors, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals to provide high quality care, and you will need strong skills in consultation. You will also need to be able to deliver psychological assessment, interventions and teaching in a variety of formats, including via the telephone and video link.

Qualifications

• Clinical Psychology Degree
• Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent as accredited by the British Psychological Society as well as additional specialist training and experience.
• Eligible for Chartered Clinical Psychologist status.
• Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• Experience of working with patients with rare and/or genetic conditions
• Experience of working in an inpatient and/or acute health setting
• Experience of conducting and interpreting cognitive assessments
• Experience of psychology research

Experience

• Significant experience of specialist psychological assessment and self-management support, as part of a multidisciplinary team across primary and secondary care settings.
• Experience of assessing and managing clients, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing situations, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
• Experience in working with other agencies/professions and working in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts and working in a multicultural framework.
• Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design, quantitative and qualitative analysis and report writing.
• Experience and interest in working within a multicultural framework.
• Highly specialist assessment, including risk and neuropsychological assessment, and formulation skills.
• Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain practice in the face of exposure to high levels of emotion and occasional challenging behaviour.
• Knowledge and adherence to the British Psychological Society Rules of Professional Conduct.
• Clinical supervision of assistant psychologists and/or MDT members
• Post-qualification experience of working in a physical health setting or with medically unexplained symptoms.
• Teaching/training of qualified professionals
• Specialist knowledge of therapeutic approaches and application to working in a physical health setting

Additional Criteria

• Able to work flexibly to respond to the needs of the service.
