Job Description
Band 6 Education Facilitator The closing date is 05 October 2025

An ideal opportunity for an individual to join the Clinical Education team with a core focus on Continuing Professional Development within the Surgical teams at Royal Papworth Hospital.

5 North is a 41 bedded cardiothoracic surgical ward, specialising in heart and lung transplantation, pulmonary thrombo endarterectomy and artificial heart devices. 5 South is a 35 bedded cardiothoracic surgical ward, specialising in Thoracic surgery Cardiac surgery and Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy.

To support staff and learners in their clinical environment across a spectrum of patient pathways. In partnership with Clinical Educators and local clinical leads, to ensure the planning, delivering, and evaluation of professional development opportunities relative to peri and post operative/intervention care while effectively communicating with learners, patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide guidance and support to staff and learners, fostering the professional development of clinical and technical skills in close cooperation with clinical area leads and line managers.
  • To work in the clinical areas to support new starters or those requiring additional input as agreed using learning contracts, action plans and approved assessment tools.
  • To be able to undertake a clinical role in the department, providing direct patient care, support the nursing team and enhancing respective skill mix and maintaining the highest standards of patient care, safety and operational efficiency.
  • To identify, support design and deliver quality clinical skills and development training programs relevant to an individual's area of practice/program of study/defined assessment program, including local induction, competence training and assessment and enablement of ongoing professional development.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Professional clinical registration in Nursing, Allied Healthcare Professional, Pharmacy or Healthcare Science with associated qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to diploma or degree level.
  • PLUS post graduate learning and professional experience to post graduate diploma level (or equivalent) relevant to practice/post, with demonstrable competence OR specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience.
Experience
  • To have specialist knowledge and experience in learner assessment, mentorship, education and professional development. To be able to support and supervise others within the wider education teams.
  • To apply a range of judgement and clinical skills across a spectrum of patient pathways in partnership with Clinical Educators and local clinical leads, to ensure the planning, delivering, and evaluation of professional development opportunities relative to peri and post operative/intervention care while effectively communicating with learners, patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • To have experience in teaching and training staff and pre-registrant students in the clinical, simulated and classroom environment.
  • To foster quality in clinical skills development, mentorship, and supervision through the provision of evidence based practice and support for mentors/ educators/ individuals. To promote the development and benchmarking of learning plans and pathways, supporting complex decision making according to need and action plan where appropriate.
  • To enable learners to understand their professional development pathway and support them into their area of work, that is evaluated and updated regularly
  • To support and positively influence recruitment and retention initiatives through attending internal and external events, contributing experience in teaching/ mentoring/ coaching to other staff, trainees and applicants.
  • To support the development, organisation and evaluation of a productive teaching and learning environment - assessing and benchmarking education and training.
  • To work in the clinical areas to support new starters or those requiring additional input as agreed using learning contracts, action plans and approved assessment tools.
  • To allocate and support supervision of staff, learners, mentor educators and assessors in practice settings, ensuring safe, high-quality learning experiences as well as contributing to service improvements.
  • To assess and promote quality clinical learning environments, critically appraise delivery standards, and support the annual Training Needs Analysis with practice development teams and key stakeholders. The post holder will undertake and, on occasion, formulate surveys, audits and learner evaluations as necessary
  • To contribute to the wider education agenda by engaging with all levels of governance structures and working autonomously within training parameters.
  • To collaborate with the multiprofessional team to support high-quality, inclusive and developmental training initiatives.
  • To identify, support design and deliver quality clinical skills and development training programs relevant to an individual's area of practice/program of study/defined assessment program, including local induction, competence training and assessment and enablement of ongoing professional development.
  • To be able to undertake a clinical role in the department, providing direct patient care, support the nursing team and enhancing respective skill mix and maintaining the highest standards of patient care, safety and operational efficiency.
  • To be able undertake complex patient care and staff/student training interventions for example: administering medications and IV infusions, venepuncture and catheter insertion, wound management, life support training.
  • To provide best practice advice in a clinical setting for mentors/educators and staff in relation to clinical practice and governance.
  • To use a range of complex training tools and simulators enabling a quality learning experience; such as live training defibrillators and high fidelity manikins. The post holder will be responsible for assembling, preparing and managing such equipment in readiness for learners and whilst in use.
  • To participate in moving and handling tasks relating to patient care utilising mechanical aids and in the preparation of the learning environment, such as positioning manikins, tables, chairs etc.
  • The post holder will have occasional exposure to emotional / distressing incidents and occasional exposure to bodily fluids
  • To be able to effectively communicate complex, confidential, and/or sensitive condition related information through a range of interpersonal skills to learners, colleagues, patients and families. This will include correspondence across a range of modalities to stakeholders within and partnered to the Trust, such as providing educational program planning and reviews, learner support and action planning, student/learner supervision and as part engagement in the delivery of direct patient care, ultimately enhancing the patient and learner experience.
  • To actively participate and engage in external and internal educational governance and clinical practice forums/groups to support continuous education and clinical practice improvement.
  • To have the ability to teach and communicate effectively at both the individual level as well as in large groups and meetings, able to ensure clear understanding and meaningful engagement.
