Job Description
Band 5 Neonatal Staff Nurse - 12 Month Secondment

The closing date is 23 November 2025

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen to join our excellent neonatal team here at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT). Our Neonatal intensive Care Unit is one of the biggest and busiest Level 2 units in London, caring for babies born at 27 weeks gestation and providing the perfect environment in which these tiny neonates can grow, thrive and develop. The unit comprises a total of 32 cots, including 3 intensive cots, 8 high dependency cots and 21 special care cots, and manages an extensive range of medical cases within these culturally diverse boroughs.

Here at BHRUT we have a dedicated and dynamic multidisciplinary team who maintain the highest quality and standards of care for our neonatal population. The successful applicant will join our team of Neonatologists, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists (including the neonatal community outreach service) and a dedicated Education Team that provides clinical training and support within the neonatal unit. We also work closely with a highly motivated team of allied health professionals to provide excellent family centred and psychosocial care for our patients and families. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, motivated, flexible and positive-thinking Neonatal Qualified in Speciality Nurse to assist in delivering high quality care and promote wellbeing for all our babies and their families.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the care of one or a defined group of babies within the Neonatal Unit without supervision, utilising and further developing specialist skills to provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care. You will also actively participate in and contribute to the management of the clinical area.

About us

We are an organisation that continually improves, driven by a determination to deliver care our patients are proud of. We are no longer in special measures; we have opened two new theatres at our elective surgical hub in King George Hospital (KGH) and, in recognition of our progress, have been shortlisted for Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal Awards.

We operate from two main sites-KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We run two busy emergency departments that saw more than 330,000 visits last year. We are campaigning to secure the £35m needed to transform the A&E at Queen's and eliminate corridor care.

Our patients benefit from the Women's Health Hub in Ilford, the Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub.

The CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and provide an extra 94,000 scans a year.

Our 8,000 staff-coming from 146 different countries and predominantly from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups-live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve. Many can work flexibly, and over 400 are part of our Ofsted-accredited apprenticeship programmes. We are proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We are looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
