Purpose of Role and background to AuSome GrowSome

AuSome GrowSome CIC, a social enterprise, was set up in August 2020 and is a community interest company.

We are passionate about:

  • creating food using sustainable technology (vertical farming via hydroponics) and
  • making a difference to individuals on the autism spectrum, with additional learning needs and facing exclusion, by providing opportunities for training and employment in our hydroponics 'farms' which will use the soilless growth of plants in an indoor place.

Hydroponics involves growing plants (microgreens and green leafy vegetables) without soil by using water-based mineral nutrient solutions.

Main Responsibilities
  • Sowing, harvesting, and packaging microgreens and greens grown by hydroponics.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of equipment (trays, tubes, pipes)
  • Monitoring hydroponics equipment
  • Inventory of seeds, packaging material, labels
  • Supporting delivery of workshops to raise awareness of hydroponics and their benefits, to groups, including young people on the autism spectrum
Skills, Experience & Attitude
  • Practical - this is a hands on role working in a polytunnel and greenhouse.
  • Can pay attention to detail - required for monitoring of the hydroponics equipment.
  • Willing to take initiative and work independently after the induction period, including some solitary working.
  • Age 18+ years old
  • Open to working with people on the Autism Spectrum
  • Able to engage with a diverse range of groups and committed to equal opportunities
  • Access to transport to travel to and from Colin Community Allotments
  • Interested in taking part in a novel project using hydroponics
Safeguarding

As this role will involve engaging with vulnerable groups, Access NI checks will be carried out at the start of the role prior to working with vulnerable groups.

Hours

Upto 12h/week, with a minimum of 6h/week. -Tuesday plus one other day. There will be greater flexibility after the induction period once you are able to work more independently. This role is funded until 30 June 2026 with the view to make it long term

This role will be based at Colin Community Allotments at 30 Colinglen Rd, Dunmurry, Belfast BT17 0LR

Support

There will be regular contact and support from Directors.

Salary

The national minimum wage £12.21 per hour
