Job Description
Overview

Assistant Head of Discipline/Senior Lecturer in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. This role is on site, based primarily in the named location. Applicants should note the university's policy on contracted hours for staff already contracted to full-time positions.

Engineering at Derby aims to deliver an outstanding learning experience, expand research capacity, and strengthen industry engagement to meet targets for REF and KEF, with facilities co-located at Markeaton Street. The discipline area includes intelligent instrumentation, smart sensor technologies, robotics, renewable energy, power engineering and advanced materials and manufacturing, with active knowledge exchange and applied research.

Responsibilities
  • Formal scheduled delivery of teaching, lectures or workshops.
  • Preparation of teaching materials and reading lists.
  • Maintain university records and submit marks and notes to the module leader for assessment boards.
  • Contribute to assessment design and mark moderation; manage electronic submission of marks.
  • Supervise Doctoral Research and provide tutorials and student support; supervise Independent Studies.
  • Attend relevant boards/meetings (development, probation and development reviews, programme committees, subject/team meetings, internal/external reviews such as QAA, college research committees and assessment boards) as arranged to fit commitments.
  • Assist with health and safety compliance and other university policies.
  • Demonstrate a first degree in a discipline appropriate to the taught area or equivalent professional experience.
Experience
  • Experience of working in an industry related to the discipline being taught.
  • Experience of teaching in higher education contexts, including small group facilitation.
Skills, knowledge & abilities
  • Ability to teach at the appropriate level and relate theory to practice.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills; the ability to inspire and motivate students.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and to work independently or as part of a team.
Business requirements
  • Flexible approach to work including travel between sites.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent professional experience.
Additional Experience
  • Experience of teaching students in an HE context, including small group facilitation, is desirable.
