Assistant Technical Officer - Mattress Decontamination

Step into a role where your work directly protects patients and supports frontline clinical teams. As an Assistant Technical Officer within the Mattress Decontamination Team at King's Mill Hospital, you will play a key part in preventing infection and promoting patient comfort by ensuring dynamic pressure relieving mattresses are safely collected, thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and returned ready for use.

You will be responsible for transporting mattresses across wards and departments, checking decontamination certification, and meticulously cleaning and disinfecting equipment in line with strict infection prevention and Quality Management System standards. Every mattress must be carefully inspected to ensure it is fully functional, safe, and compliant before being barcoded, tracked, and redistributed.

This is a hands on, active role requiring attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment. You will help ensure the right equipment is available in the right place at the right time - directly contributing to patient safety, dignity, and high quality care across the Trust.

Job responsibilities
  • Collect dynamic pressure relieving mattresses from wards and departments.
  • Transport and manage mattresses within the Trust, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Verify decontamination certification and compliance.
  • Clean and disinfect mattresses and related equipment according to infection prevention protocols.
  • Inspect mattresses for functionality and safety before barcoding, tracking, and redistribution.
  • Record and report any issues or deviations from standards.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to meet equipment needs efficiently.
Person Specification Knowledge Requirements
  • Health & Safety issues.
  • Moving & handling procedures.
Qualifications
  • Adequate level of education to perform in the role; for example, pass grade in GCSE English and Maths, or equivalent, to demonstrate appropriate level of literacy and numeracy.
  • Basic keyboard skills.
  • GCSE Maths and English.
Further Training
  • Training in all aspects of departmental processes required.
  • NHS National Decontamination Training Programme.
Experience
  • Previous NHS experience.
  • Experience of working in a Decontamination Service.
Contractual Requirements
  • Medically cleared by Occupational Health as fit to undertake the duties & responsibilities of the role.
  • Bank holiday cover.
  • On-call rota.
  • Saturday and Sunday working rota.
  • Service provision to both King's Mill Hospital and Newark sites.
