Assistant Director - Highways and Public Protection

Reporting to the Executive Director for Operations and Partnerships, you will take both strategic and operational ownership of a large, multidisciplinary service. You will lead a broad and essential portfolio spanning highways, transport, environmental health, trading standards, licensing and parking. These services are relied upon daily by residents as they travel, run businesses or seek community safety.
Responsibilities- Lead the highways network maintenance and improvement.
- Ensure effective regulatory services across environmental health, trading standards, licensing, and parking.
- Shape customer experience, enhance digital capability, and drive continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with elected members, partners, and colleagues to shape priorities and outcomes for the Liverpool City Region.
- Balance long term strategy with day to day delivery and manage competing demands and resources.
You may come from highways, public protection, transport or a related frontline service, but what sets you apart is your ability to lead large operational teams and deliver meaningful improvement. You bring a strong track record of managing performance, budgets and people, alongside experience of leading change through service redesign, workforce development or digital transformation. You understand what good looks like and have the confidence to challenge, innovate and improve.
You are a visible and collaborative leader, building trust quickly, communicating clearly, and comfortable working with elected members and partners in a political environment. You lead from the front, engaging with teams and stakeholders, and bring people with you on the journey.
