Job Description
Main duties of the job
  • Registered Operating Department Practitioner / Anaesthetic Nurse
  • Work independently in teams or with minimum supervision.
  • Provide high quality individualised patient care at all times.
  • Prepare the clinical environment for the operating list and anticipated workload.
  • Participate in or lead all stages of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
  • Assist with the safe transfer and positioning of patients onto the operating table.
  • Act as scrubbed or circulating assistant as required; carry out checks and counts on swabs, needles, instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure safe preparation of patients for operative procedures.
  • Assist the anaesthetist with all anaesthetic procedures as per operational policies.
  • Maintain equipment, stock levels, and clinical records in accordance with policy.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed drugs; monitor effects.
  • Provide peri operative patient care, including post resuscitation and immediate post operative care.
  • Maintain high standards of conduct, adapt to other duties as needed, and use Trust computer systems.
  • Participate in Third Tier On Call rota and report adverse incidents promptly.
Qualifications
  • City and Guilds 752/NVQ Level 3/Dip HE in Operating Department Practice.
  • Anaesthetic Nurses - ENB 182 or equivalent UK recognised qualification.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Demonstrable knowledge of perioperative practice, including up to date AAGBI, NICE and DAS guidelines.
  • Knowledge of normal and altered anatomy, physiology and common patient conditions.
  • Understanding of pharmacology in perioperative care.
  • Member of relevant professional bodies - HCPC or NMC (students will attain HCPC upon qualification).
  • Evidence of post qualification experience and continuing professional development.
  • Understanding of national guidance, CQC and its implications for practice.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to assess patients and develop high quality peri operative care plans.
  • Recognise and act on changes in physiological parameters.
  • Management and leadership skills; prioritise own workload and direct others.
  • Work autonomously within national and local policy.
  • Escalate issues to senior staff and remain calm under pressure.
  • IT skills - use of e mail and keyboard skills.

Salary

£33,677 to £40,996 per annum including HCAS, plus 15% retention & recruitment premiums.
