Job Description

Mayfield Medical Centre is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner (APNP) to join our friendly and forward thinking primary care team on a permanent part time basis.

We are seeking an APNP to work 3 sessions per week across Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. The role is contracted at 13.5 hours per week, with each session consisting of 4.5 hours.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering high quality, patient centred care to children and young people within a busy GP practice setting. The successful candidate will work autonomously while collaborating closely with GPs, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic conditions in paediatric patients.

The role offers the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of integrated, proactive, and community based healthcare services while supporting innovation within primary care.

Working hours are:

  • Monday: Afternoon session (4.5 hours)
  • Wednesday: Afternoon session (4.5 hours)
  • Friday: Afternoon session (4.5 hours)

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner include undertaking advanced clinical assessments, diagnosing and treating children and young people presenting with both acute and chronic conditions, and managing same day urgent paediatric presentations within primary care.

The postholder will independently prescribe medication where qualified, deliver evidence based care, and ensure safe clinical decision making at all times. Additional responsibilities include undertaking health promotion and preventative care initiatives, identifying and escalating safeguarding concerns appropriately, and maintaining accurate clinical records using the practice clinical system.

The role also requires close multidisciplinary collaboration with GPs, health visitors, and community services to ensure coordinated patient care. Furthermore, the APNP will contribute to audit activity, quality improvement projects, and ongoing service development within the practice.

Job responsibilities

The Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner will provide advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for children and young people presenting with a wide range of conditions within primary care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing same day and urgent paediatric presentations
  • Independently prescribing medication where qualified and appropriate
  • Delivering evidence based care and safe clinical decision making
  • Undertaking health promotion, preventative care, and safeguarding activities
  • Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous clinical records
  • Working collaboratively with GPs, health visitors, community services, and the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Identifying and escalating safeguarding concerns in line with local and national policies
  • Participating in audit, quality improvement, and service development activities

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills alongside strong advanced clinical reasoning and decision making abilities.

Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Recognised Advanced Clinical Practice or Advanced Nurse Practitioner qualification
  • Significant post registration experience in paediatric care
  • Evidence of continued professional development at an advanced level
  • Non Medical Prescriber qualification or currently working towards qualification
  • Up to date safeguarding children training and knowledge of current legislation
  • Minor illness and/or minor injury qualification
  • Experience of advanced practice within General Practice or Primary Care
  • Additional paediatric or urgent care qualifications

Experience
  • Significant experience working within paediatrics in a primary care, urgent care, or hospital setting
  • Experience independently assessing, diagnosing, and managing acute and chronic paediatric conditions
  • Experience of autonomous clinical decision making and advanced clinical reasoning
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Experience managing urgent and same day presentations
  • Experience maintaining accurate and contemporaneous clinical records
  • Previous experience working within General Practice
  • Experience using clinical systems such as EMIS
  • Experience contributing to audit, quality improvement, or service development initiatives

£45,000 to £50,000 a year - Actual salary: £16,413 to £18,236 pro rata DOE
