About HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS)

HMCTS is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. Our roles support our service users and colleagues within HMCTS, where people and businesses access potentially life-changing justice.

About the role

The Crown Court Clerk role is central to the justice system. It requires high emotional resilience, an understanding and sensitivity to complex and sometimes difficult issues, and a non judgemental approach to service users. You will need to be an active listener and confident communicator, able to speak publicly in court, liaise confidently with Judges, defendants, prosecutors, the media and the public on complex and sensitive matters in a calm and professional manner.

You will work as a real team player with the clerking team, ensuring the smooth running of all Crown Courts sitting daily, intervening in court when required and maximising judicial sitting time.

With experience in producing exact and time critical documentation, your ability to focus will be key in taking verdicts, conducting arraignments, producing court orders and recording hearing outcomes accurately and efficiently.

Resilience, a willingness to learn, the ability to multitask, and familiarity with working within processes, plus IT skills to adapt to new systems and technologies, are essential as we constantly invest in digital solutions to improve the way we deliver justice.

Your skills and experience
  • Able to speak publicly and within a court room environment.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to complete documents accurately and to deadlines.
  • IT proficient with the ability to learn and adapt to different technologies and software packages.
Benefits and working patterns

This role gives you the opportunity to make a difference in delivering justice and to develop your career within the Civil Service.

Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. HMCTS welcomes part time, flexible and job sharing working patterns that meet the demands of the role and business needs. All applications for part time, flexible and job sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ's Flexible Working policy.

These operational roles are customer facing and office based to provide HMCTS services to the public.
