Course Description

Enhance your data-handling skills

Data management involves overseeing and organising data to treat it as a valuable resource. This practice ensures data can be effectively analysed for informed decision-making.

On this five-week course, you’ll learn the best practices in data management, storage, sharing, and security.

You’ll gain an introduction to different formats and tools to store and communicate your plant phenotyping effectively.

Gain a deeper understanding of data formats

Data formats show us the structure of data, giving the information its meaning.

On the course, you’ll take a deep dive into data formats – from simple and image to MIAPPE style formatting – to ensure you understand the meaning behind the data you collect.

Master software tools and data compression

Next, you’ll understand how to use software tools, such as GitHub, to help with data compression.

Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be able to maximise the data you handle but reduce the space it fills.

Understand the importance of data security and storage

You’ll then look at the databases that store your data. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of database management systems, you’ll learn how to create your own MySQL database to use in your plant phenotyping work.

You’ll also have the chance to practise using popular backup services such as SharePoint, Dropbox, and Google Drive.

Finally, you’ll explore the importance of security and integrity within your data management plans. By the end, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to manage your data efficiently.

This course is designed for anyone who wants to enhance their skills and knowledge in data management. It is particularly relevant to those working in plant phenotyping.

This course is designed to give people an overview of data management techniques that are complementary to data processing and image analysis methods covered in related courses developed by the University of Nottingham and the University of Lincoln.
