The Opportunity

As a Supplier Development Engineer, you'll provide leadership and technical expertise to drive quality excellence across Caterpillar's supply base. This role involves working closely with suppliers to assess product quality, ensure compliance with manufacturing specifications and engineering standards, and deliver defect-free materials.

You'll support suppliers through on-site engagement, leading quality improvement initiatives, resolving issues, and implementing robust process controls. Your work will focus on enhancing performance across Quality, Cost, Logistics, Delivery, and Management (QCLDM), ensuring suppliers meet certification requirements and key business KPIs.

Responsibilities
  • Supplier Quality Leadership: Partner with suppliers to implement robust process controls, resolve quality issues, and drive continuous improvement through strategic collaboration and quality assurance planning.
  • Audits & Assessments: Conduct on-site audits and QCLDM-based evaluations to assess supplier manufacturing environments, practices, and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. Lead quality system audits and develop actionable improvement plans.
  • New Product Introduction (NPI): Manage supplier readiness by reviewing APQP documentation, providing technical support, and coordinating strategic activities to ensure successful product launches.
  • Quality Control & Compliance: Oversee the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and monitor adherence to Process Change Notifications (PCNs), ensuring rigorous quality standards are met.
  • Corrective Action Management: Lead 8D reviews, validate permanent corrective actions, and support suppliers in reducing defect rates through targeted process enhancements.
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting: Develop and track supplier KPIs, analyze monthly performance data, and generate reports highlighting defect trends and improvement opportunities. Guide suppliers toward achieving Caterpillar Supplier Excellence Recognition (SER).
Qualifications
  • Problem Solving: Applies structured problem-solving techniques such as 8D to identify, analyse, and resolve operational and process-related issues. Uses diagnostic tools and stakeholder input to evaluate risks and determine effective solutions. Demonstrates sound judgement, a data-led approach, and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Process Improvement: Evaluates current processes to identify inefficiencies and implements targeted improvements using tools like FMEA, Control Plans, and Capability Studies. Focuses on high-impact areas to drive measurable gains in performance and efficiency. Maintains a continuous improvement mindset and collaborates effectively across teams.
  • Supplier Evaluations and Certification: Supports supplier selection and certification through structured assessments and reference checks. Reviews supplier capabilities using engineering drawings, GD&T, and measurement techniques to ensure compliance with quality standards. Demonstrates cross-functional experience across procurement, supply chain, and engineering.
  • Production Part Approval Process (PPAP): Manages PPAP implementation to ensure suppliers consistently meet customer quality standards. Reviews documentation resolves submission issues, and trains others on PPAP levels and requirements. Applies tools such as GR&R, FMEA, and Control Plans, supported by strong project management and manufacturing process knowledge.
