DEPARTMENT: SSR (Safety)
LOCATION: Can be based at any of the main offices (Salford, Glasgow, London, Belfast, Cardiff). This is a hybrid role, and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £45,000 - £55,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

This role provides a specialist safety service as part of the BBC Safety Team, influencing and engaging with team leaders across the organisation to ensure high standards of safety performance and safety leadership for everyone at the BBC. This includes leading on the BBC Safety's role in supporting team leaders to meet the standards BBC sets for safety and the importance of its role in the overall success of the organisation. The role works independently to resolve complex queries and collaboratively as part of a wider specialist team to address strategic challenges and lead transformative safety initiatives across the organisation.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

As SSR Specialist, you will:

  • Collaborate with the Safety Manager to assist with the execution of the BBC Safety strategy
  • Provide second-line assurance by coaching business leaders, enabling safe decision-making, and assuring the effectiveness of safety systems and culture
  • Lead on projects with colleagues in similar functions. Engaging with colleagues across all levels of the business to influence policies, frameworks and the safety success of projects and programs
  • Promote a safer BBC for all our colleagues and partners by shaping strategies and standards and helping successfully embed them. You'll support team leaders with measuring safety performance, learning from insights, and developing Action Plans that will make a meaningful impact on worker safety
  • Proactively shape strategic conversations with executive leaders and senior stakeholders to position safety as a fundamental driver of organisational performance and purpose. Supporting the delivery of the BBC's safety vision and mission through meaningful stakeholder engagement and by guiding key decisions that align with safety priorities
  • Work collaboratively with and influence senior leaders to benchmark and ensure compliance with safety regulations, standards and industry best practice. This includes acting as a lead for BBC Safety and driving the wider network to continuously improve safety of the broadcasting industry
  • Build and sustain trusted partnerships across the BBC and externally to co-create and deliver a purpose-led, risk-informed safety strategy
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Relevant specialist diploma or equivalent (e.g., NEBOSH, NCRQ) and professional institute membership (e.g., CMIOSH, CIEH)
  • A talent for building positive relationships and influencing colleagues and senior leaders across the business and externally
  • Excellent ability to coach and enable business leaders and teams to embed safety thinking, processes and behaviours
  • Experience of working in a strategic safety role within a large and complex environment
  • Great safety governance, compliance, communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to write compelling and influential reports, training and presentations to a high standard

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Demonstrate a collaborative, adaptable, and agile approach that is responsive to the values, motivations, and needs of executive stakeholders
  • Be a recognised leader in safety culture transformation and human performance, with experience influencing at board or senior leadership level
  • Exhibit professional curiosity and creative thinking to challenge conventional practices and promote intelligent risk-taking
  • Communicate complex safety issues clearly and credibly across all levels, with the confidence to challenge constructively and the humility to listen

This role will require regular travel around the UK.
