Important notice
In line with our redeployment policy, we'll prioritise applications from employees who are under formal notice of redundancy.
As a charity operating nationally, with a cause that spans heritage, climate and nature, the National Trust has a strong interest in government policy on a wide range of subjects. Our Public Policy team supports the Trust to engage with key public policy issues and promote the National Trust's cause with policy makers and government departments.
What it's like to work here
We're bigger than you think, we're more complicated than we appear and we're larger scale than you'd imagine. We've got passionate people in all our teams, and we've got so much more we want to achieve. We're for ever, for everyone and we really mean that. We want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.
What you'll be doing
You'll be responsible for building relationships with government policy makers and helping to develop the National Trust's influence and policy impact.
You'll identify and advise on potential risks and opportunities that government policies will create for the Trust and work with National Trust staff and external partners to meet and address them. Supporting the Head of Public Policy, you'll need to build and maintain relationships with ministers, officials and sector partners, helping to identify who is key to support the National Trust's agenda.
You'll also be working to develop the National Trust's views on public policy. You'll be drawing on evidence from the Trust's own experiences and working with expert colleagues to put forward practical proposals for policy change, communicating these to a range of audiences and seeking to influence the debate.
Who we're looking for
Applications from redeployees are assessed against the minimum criteria for the role. In your application, please provide details of how you meet the minimum criteria below:
- Political awareness, and an understanding of the broad structures of government and parliament.
- Understanding of, and some experience of interacting with, public policy
- An ability to work with complex information
- Evidence of good written and oral communication skills
- Experience of managing relationships effectively
Criteria for all other applicants:
- You'll have experience of working on public policy issues, with a good understanding of our political system, government policy-making processes and how to influence policy outcomes.
- You'll have experience of building and maintaining internal and external relationships, and be able to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders across different issues and priorities.
- You'll have exceptional written and spoken communication skills, and the ability to interpret complex information and translate it into easily understandable content for a range of audiences.
- We're particularly looking for applicants with experience of working on public policy relating to land use and environmental regulation; economic, cultural and social policy, including health and wellbeing; or local government and place-based policy making.
The package
The National Trust has the motto 'For everyone, for ever' at its heart. We're working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It's important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve.
