Our service runs Monday to Sunday, including bank holidays. Opportunities are available for both full time and part time.

Main duties of the job

Our Housekeepers are key members of the ward team. Working under the direction of the senior nurse or ward manager, you will collaborate with domestic services, catering and linen services staff as well as nursing staff and clinical support staff. In this vital role, you will lead ward services such as catering, cleaning, equipment and supplies. Tasks include:

  • Talking to and reassuring patients
  • Ordering non clinical supplies
  • Stocking up the ward
  • Keeping the clinical area clean and performing general cleaning
  • Accompanying auditors during clinical audits from infection control
  • Keeping the ward clean and tidy
  • Serving and clearing away meals
  • Preparing snacks and drinks
  • Reporting faults

To be successful, you must be able to work independently as well as part of a team ensuring a clean, safe environment is maintained. You will also have:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Numeracy and literacy level 2 or equivalent
  • Basic IT skills including Word, e mail and keyboard skills
  • Caring and compassionate attributes
  • Ability to prioritise work and effective time management skills
  • Desire to undertake any additional training as required for the post

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Cleaning

Assist the Senior Sister in maintaining cleaning standards on the ward including spot cleaning, cleaning of general and specialist equipment, keeping ward safe and tidy, maintaining bed area upkeep, specialist surface cleaning, cleaning in isolation areas, and maintaining a log of medical equipment and cleaning monitors.

Catering

Encourage and assist patients to order food, ensuring assistance with eating, monitoring intake, preparing and serving hot/cold snacks, serving meals with nursing team, providing eating assistance, preparing beverages, ensuring correct temperature per hygiene regulations, preparing serving areas, washing equipment, ensuring kitchen cleanliness, labeling and storing refrigerated food, coordinating extra meal requirements and ensuring water access for patients.

Maintaining the Environment

Assist in monitoring and audit of service delivery for cleaning, food, linen and environment, maintain defect call log, assist with ad hoc maintenance, support equipment monitoring, transport and dispose of waste, support monitoring of access and security, respect privacy, help manage aggressive behaviour, store equipment safely, ensure equipment is operational.

General

Transport or collect equipment, consumables and information, update paper based records, respond to general information requests, maintain confidentiality, understand Complaints Procedure, assist training of staff involved with ward housekeeping services, keep up to date with food hygiene standards and waste categorisation.

Person specification Education
  • Numeracy and literacy level 2 or equivalent
  • Ability and willingness to undertake appropriate training
  • Basic IT skills including word, e mail, keyboard skills and data collection
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to use initiative appropriately
  • Demonstrate awareness of healthcare policies and procedures
Work Experience
  • Experience of time management skills and prioritising work
  • Experience of working in a health or social care setting
