About the Role:

This is a new position responsible for embedding Liberty Mutual's Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) Framework within Liberty International Insurance (LII) - including for LII as a supply function to other business segments.

This role will ensure that AI systems deployed across LII are aligned with the LM framework, regulatory and operational requirements, as well as LII's strategic objectives.

This role will act as the single point of responsibility for developing and implementing the RAI framework, governance, policies, and controls to mitigate risks associated with AI adoption. Working with key stakeholders from relevant functions and business segment teams, the role will embed responsible AI throughout the AI lifecycle - from assessment and design to deployment, monitoring, and decommissioning.

As a trusted advisor to business leadership, this role will enable oversight of AI-related risks and opportunities, and drive stakeholder education on AI governance practices, to ensure LII maintains a competitive advantage while operating within an evolving regulatory landscape.

Key Responsibilities
  • Embed the LM RAI Framework across LII, LM Re and Surety international, including appropriate elements of RAI governance such as policies, standards, procedures, and controls to govern the AI lifecycle.
  • Collaborate closely with Privacy, Legal, Compliance, Risk, Information Security, Technology and other functions across LM, GRS, LII, LM Re and Surety international to integrate governance approaches and ensure compliance with broader enterprise frameworks and standards.
  • Support maintenance of inventory of AI models, including in relation to third parties.
  • Integrate RAI assurance and oversight into BAU across functions and jurisdiction, balancing local first business strategy with global assurance.
  • Ensure regular monitoring of AI systems are carried out to maintain ongoing compliance with RAI requirements, identifying gaps and driving remediation activities by business and technology owners.
  • Monitor model inventory for new models subject to AI requirements (e.g. transparency, individual rights) and implement appropriate processes to ensure these are met.
  • Establish and lead an AI governance capability, obtaining buy in to build the necessary structure and operating model to support RAI activities.
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance on AI risk management, to support ensuring appropriate identification, assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of RAI-related risks.
  • Monitor the evolving AI regulatory landscape globally, as relevant to markets where LII operates, and liaise with LII and enterprise functions as required.
  • Building on LM RAI training, lead the enhancement of AI literacy and governance training programmes within LII, to build capability and awareness of RAI.
  • Establish LII RAI metrics, reporting, and dashboards to help provide visibility to senior leadership, regulators (where required), and legal entity Boards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the business, acting as a trusted advisor on responsible AI including as relevant to opportunities and risks.
  • Stay abreast of RAI-related industry developments, emerging technologies, academic research, and practices, continuously evolving LII's approach to meet desired strategy and risk appetite.
  • Support with AI incident response and investigation into AI system incidents or issues, ensuring appropriate reporting, root cause analysis and corrective actions where required.
Skills and Experience
  • Experience in a related field (e.g. governance, risk management, technology) preferred, but we will consider applications from all candidates with relevant experience.
  • Experience in implementing AI governance, model risk management, or technology risk management, preferably within the financial services or insurance sector.
  • Strong knowledge of AI-related regulatory requirements and frameworks relevant to LII's business, including the EU AI Act, UK AI regulatory proposals, and equivalents in APAC and LATAM. Awareness of US position would be an advantage.
  • Deep understanding of AI/ML technologies, including e.g. model development methodologies, algorithm design, and AI system deployment and operations.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing governance frameworks, policies, and control environments in complex, global organisations.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with demonstrated ability to influence and build consensus across diverse functions, levels, and geographies.
  • Strong understanding of risk management principles and practices, including enterprise risk management frameworks and the three lines of defence model.
  • Exceptional communication & storytelling skills, with ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business language for executive and board audiences.
  • Able to balance risk, innovation, and business enablement in the context of an emerging AI technological and regulatory landscape.
  • Experience in change management and driving cultural transformation in large organisations.
