AWS Senior Platform Engineer - FinOps - Appvia - ACTIVE Security Clearance required. Partnering with public cloud providers, we work across the public and private sector to help customers build modern cloud platforms, embed platform engineering best practices, improve governance, and optimise costs to unlock developer velocity and accelerate delivery practices that make cloud a competitive advantage.
About the role We are urgently seeking a Senior AWS Platform Engineer to lead a critical project on one of our major public sector FinOps focused programmes. This is a hands on engineering and consulting position where you will support a customer in optimising their AWS estate, maturing their cloud financial governance, and enabling cost efficient, scalable platform operations.
You will work closely with client teams to build automation, enhance observability, improve cloud cost controls, and embed FinOps principles across engineering and platform functions. This role requires both deep AWS engineering skills and strong awareness of cloud economics within a regulated environment.

About you You are an experienced AWS engineer with strong platform engineering skills and exposure to FinOps, cloud cost optimisation, and financial governance practices. You enjoy solving complex cloud challenges, improving efficiency, and working closely with customers in highly regulated environments.
You should have experience with:

- Collaborating with engineers and non technical stakeholders
- Applying AWS and DevOps best practices
- Supporting project planning and delivery
- Strong communication and team motivation skills
- Collaborate with clients to assess their current infrastructure, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop tailored Cloud and DevOps strategies.
- Design and implement scalable, resilient, and secure cloud native solutions leveraging industry best practices and cutting edge technologies.
- Developing pipelines to deploy code all the way to production with Terraform, using GitHub Actions
- Managing new demand for platform and application onboarding
- Assisting application development teams to architect their applications to be cloud native, or helping them transform existing applications to cloud native where possible.
- Implementing monitoring and alerting
- Improving security posture of applications being migrated
- Creating secure deployment patterns and templates/modules for application development teams to reuse.
- Gathering requirements for building and maintaining a centralised platform for product teams to iterate on their applications in AWS.
- Setting best practices and policies, especially around microservice architecture
- Developing, maintaining and operating complex operational tooling (e.g. Kubernetes, Opensearch, Prometheus, Grafana, Github or equivalent alternative technologies)
- Assessing customer technical capabilities and upskilling for reduced friction and increased platform adoption.
- Enhancing operational reliability and scalability of existing products
- POC'ing new ideas and products, and balancing trade offs between technical, analytical and product needs.
- Streamlining operational tasks through engineering and automation
- Improving operational visibility around core products such as tracking technologies, improved metrics etc.
- Implementing integrations between components to improve the teams way of working
- Improving knowledge amongst the team through code reviews, documentation, technical guidance and mentoring
- Reducing the number of DevOps resources in projects by enabling developers to be more self service
- FinOps & Cloud Cost Optimisation: Strong capability in analysing cloud spend, implementing cost efficient architectures, driving tagging and budgeting standards, and using AWS cost tooling (Cost Explorer, CUR/Athena, Budgets, Forecasting) to optimise usage and improve financial governance.
- Platform Engineering: Proficiency in designing and implementing scalable, resilient, and secure cloud platforms.
- Automation: Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) practices, automation tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) and scripting languages (e.g. Python, Ruby).
- Container Orchestration: Knowledge of container orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes) and their managed counterparts (e.g., EKS, AKS, GKE).
- Public Cloud Expertise: Understanding of cloud services, architecture, and best practices in one or more major public cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- DevOps Practices: Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, version control systems, and containerisation technologies (e.g., Docker).
- Networking: Expertise in designing and managing secure, scalable AWS network architectures (VPC, VPN, Load Balancers, Transit Gateway).
- Project Leadership: Demonstrated experience delivering cloud migration, optimisation, or transformation projects.
- Client Facing Experience: Proven track record of engaging with clients, understanding their requirements, and delivering solutions that exceed expectations.
- Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in cross functional teams, communicate technical concepts to non technical stakeholders, and drive consensus.
- Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying abreast of industry trends, participating in professional development activities, and obtaining relevant certifications.
