Senior Neonatal Clinical and Simulation Fellow

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Nottingham Neonatal Service. Applications are invited for a Senior Neonatal Clinical and Simulation Fellow for a period of 12 months. Successful applicants will have an exciting experience working as a middle grade neonatal doctor in Nottingham Neonatal.

This post is based in the neonatal service of Nottingham University Hospitals and will involve working on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at either City campus or Queens medical centre campus, covering both sites. Nottingham is the lead neonatal centre for the north of the East Midlands Operational Delivery Network with two neonatal units providing tertiary neonatal care.

Main duties of the job

Neonatal Intensive Care - Consolidate practical procedures and clinical skills relevant to tertiary neonatal intensive care. Experience will be gained using varied ventilation strategies and inhaled nitric oxide. Skills include airway management and intubation, peripheral arterial cannulation, umbilical catheterisation, intercostal drains, long line insertion, cranial ultrasound and echocardiography.

Neonatal simulation - 25% protected time for simulation and patient safety experience. Build skills in simulation, debrief and education. Encourage exploration of peer observation modalities and facilitation skills.

Key clinical opportunities include care of the extremely premature infant, stabilisation and transport of neonates with cardiac conditions, care of neonates with surgical conditions such as gastroschisis, spina bifida and NEC, therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, nephrology shared care cases, parallel planning with palliative care, antenatal counselling of high risk pregnancies and neurodevelopmental clinics.

  • Full GMC registration
Training / Experience
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Tertiary level neonatal experience at middle grade of at least six months
  • NLS Provider
  • Neonatal clinical skills to work at a middle grade level in a tertiary neonatal unit including practical procedures
  • Advanced skills in an area of special interest within neonatology
  • NLS Instructor
  • Neonatal transport experience/training Advanced Resuscitation of Newborn and Infant provider
  • Evidence of basic management skills
Teaching
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduate doctors
  • Experience of clinical simulation
  • Completed teaching courses / train the trainer / GIC
  • Appraisal and assessment training and skills
  • Experience designing and delivering teaching and/or simulation sessions
Personal skills
  • Able to supervise junior staff effectively
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English
Audit/Research
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit
  • Understanding of clinical governance issues
  • Ability to assess and apply evidence based research into everyday clinical practice
  • Commitment to development and adherence to departmental guidelines and protocols
  • Attendance at neonatal scientific meetings
  • Evidence of having written / participated in evidence based guidelines
  • Presentations at regional & national meetings
