RCS England Senior Clinical Fellowship in Dialysis Access SurgeryThe closing date is 12 December 2025
This fellowship post has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of England as part of the RCS Senior Clinical Fellowship scheme. It will provide excellent experience in all forms of dialysis access in adults. The main focus will be on the assessment, management and care of the population of patients on haemodialysis, and there will also be the opportunity to gain experience in peritoneal dialysis care.
The post will provide experience suitable for either Phase 2 or Phase 3 of the ISCP General Surgery curriculum or Vascular Surgery curriculum. Doctors who have gained Certificate of Completion of Training looking to gain subspecialty training are also encouraged to apply, as appropriate experience at this level could also be provided. Training in both standard and complex haemodialysis access surgery will be provided by working alongside experienced Consultants. There is a significant emphasis on multidisciplinary team working within the Department, and there will be opportunities to gain experience with Ultrasound, Ultrasonic Angiology, Interventional Radiology and Anaesthetic techniques.
Main duties of the job- Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
- Continuing clinical responsibility for patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
The Department of Nephrology and Transplantation at Guy's Hospital is one of the largest in the UK, providing kidney care to South East London, neighbouring areas of Kent and Channel Islands.
In addition, we receive a significant number of complex referrals from a much wider geographical area. We provide a comprehensive range of services for this population, from management of mild kidney disease through to acute kidney injury (AKI) and the full range of modalities of renal replacement therapy.
We perform almost 300 transplants each year, have the largest living kidney donor programme in the country and are a supra-regional centre for both combined kidney/pancreas and pancreas alone transplantation. We have the country's largest antibody incompatible transplant programme. We performed the first robotic transplants in the UK and have world-class expertise in vascular access and transplant urology.
We offer a full range of peritoneal and haemodialysis therapies both at home and through a network of satellite units.
Job responsibilities- Lead and support ward rounds, theatre lists and clinics primarily for the dialysis access service, with possible involvement in the general kidney transplantation surgical service.
- Full GMC Registration
- Other relevant postgraduate qualifications such as MRCS or equivalent
- A commitment to and evidence of multidisciplinary practice
- A team based approach to care and service management
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clinical and non-clinical patients and their carers/relatives
- Ability to initiate, pursue, and complete clinical or medical research
- Research degree (e.g. MSc, MD(Res), PhD) is desirable
- Ability to teach undergraduate students or other junior doctors
- Formal teaching qualification is desirable
- Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical and Surgical Practice set out by the GMC
- Significant experience in General Surgery and/or Vascular Surgery
- Experience of Haemodialysis Access or Peritoneal Dialysis Surgery
