Job overview

Support the Clinical Skills Activities Team (CAST) in delivering clinical skills within the Trust. The post holder is part of DERI, based within the Clinical Education Team, and will provide clinical skills training, support the Trust Preceptorship Multi Professional Programme, and offer cross cover to other clinical teams within DERI.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver clinical skills training (e.g. venepuncture, cannulation, IV therapies, ECG, male catheterisation, tracheostomy care, Acute Illness Management (AIM) and CSW AIM).
  • Produce monthly reports on clinical skills courses, training and development and preceptorship progress.
  • Manage teaching groups to ensure training delivered is equitable to all users.
  • Collate data, documentation and resources such as feedback from evaluations to assess course materials.
  • Provide support and advice to clinical areas on skills, international nurses and preceptorship.
  • Adapt training delivery to service needs and demand.
  • Organise, prioritise and plan own workload, working autonomously.
  • Facilitate an adult learning process that creates a safe, non threatening climate supporting learning across the health care system.
  • Organise and deliver a training programme for new international nurses.
  • Support the development of the Multi Professional Preceptorship Programme across the Trust.
  • Support other clinical teams within DERI in facilitating their courses as required.
  • Serve as a faculty member for resuscitation courses (e.g. ILS/BLS) dependent on area of expertise.
  • Evaluate service delivery, identify areas for improvement and initiate change as required.
  • Assist and develop quality improvement ideas and programmes to enhance educational outcomes across the Trust.
Working for our organisation

The post is full time. Hours are predominantly Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with flexibility required to cover training needs. The role involves working across all sites of ELHT, with the majority of time spent between Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Hospitals.

Person specification
  • Evidence of competence within a wide range of clinical skills.
  • Subject specific expertise and clinical skills knowledge.
  • Teaching/assessing qualification.
  • Extensive and recent post registration clinical experience in an acute setting.
  • Evidence of formal facilitation skills, training and teaching experience.
  • Experience of supporting learners in the clinical setting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of preceptorship frameworks and standards.
  • Analytical skills, including critical thinking, communication techniques, problem solving and creative thinking.
  • Organisational and evaluation skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with good time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to form positive working relationships.
  • Self motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Current NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Access to a vehicle to travel across sites if needed.
  • Formal teaching qualification.
  • AIM train the trainer.
  • ECDL / IT literate.
  • Knowledge of educational frameworks.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement programme standards.
  • ILS or BLS provider.
